Sensory modality profiles of antonyms

چکیده

Abstract Adjectives that are used to describe sensory experiences often express more than one modality. The adjective sweet , for instance, may primarily be associated with taste (i.e., is the dominant modality of sweet), but it can also smell, sound or sight, and possibly even touch. It has been shown some modalities combine easily others. Many adjectives taste, but, less likely, sound. These associations between as they expressed in language topic this study. We looked at distribution combinations pairs antonymic (e.g., sweet–sour ), how these differed from isolation. In our dataset, there was a sizeable number consisting differing modalities. Within those pairs, we observed sight touch vice versa. Similarly, smell Finally, both hearing not other way around. results contribute understanding experiences, and, that, shaped by words use them.

Sensory Modality Segregation

Why are sensory modalities segregated the way they are? In this paper we show that sensory modalities are well designed for self-supervised crossmodal learning. Using an unsupervised speech categorization task with visual (moving lips) and auditory (sound signal) inputs, we show that very informative auditory dimensions actually harm performance when moved to the visual side of the network. It ...

Multi-modality Sensory Feedback

Prostheses for clinical use restore the lost motor function of the hand, but not the sensory function. Implementing sensory feedback (SF) in prostheses can increase the grasping capability, introduce a feeling of embodiment of the prosthesis, and reduce phantom limb pain [1], [2]. The current noninvasive SF systems normally only incorporate one-modality (electrotactile, mechanotactile, or vibro...

Decomposing Antonyms?

Are the marked members of antonym-pairs such as long – short decomposed in the syntax? Büring has recently argued that they are, on the basis of evidence about the distribution of Rullmann-ambiguities and crosspolar anomalies. But the readings of marked antonyms in the complements of matrix modals seem to argue for the opposite conclusion. The dilemma that results defies a simple solution. Perh...

Evaluative Polarity of Antonyms

This study investigates speakers’ assessment of the evaluative polarity of the members of eight antonym pairs, e.g., fast–slow and warm–cold, that are not inherently evaluative, unlike antonyms such as good–bad, ugly–beautiful. The contentful structures foregrounded by fast–slow and warm–cold are SPEED and TEMPERATURE, repectively, but the properties that they evoke may also be profiled against...

Learning to identify antonyms

1. Introduction Antonymy is a common lexical relation that is intuitively clear (if not always easy to define) for humans, but challenging for machines. In Natural Language Processing, antonymy detection has applications in tasks of understanding language, such as paraphrase detection, question answering, and textual inference. For that reason, WordNet (Fellbaum, 2005) includes some antonymy an...
